ROMSEY TOWN put on their own display of attacking pyrotechnics with an explosive second-half display against Verwood Town on Bonfire Night as they fizzed to a sparkling 3-0 victory.

An evenly contested but goalless first half, the highlight of which was a rocket of a shot from Romsey’s Josh Bowerman drive cannoned off the inside of the post, threatened to turn a misty evening at The AEC Protection Ground into a damp squib.

Town had the upper hand in the early stages of the second half, but it took the introduction of substitute George Pomeroy to turn the game decisively in his side’s favour.

Clever play by the midfielder saw him fire a hard low cross into the box, which the visitors’ defence struggled to clear to the edge of the area where Town skipper Owen Holloway was on hand to shoot through a crowd of players and inside the post beyond the ‘keeper’s despairing dive.

It was double jeopardy for Verwood with a second yellow card for Bignall meaning he was dismissed and teenage striker Hubert Cegielka sent the ‘keeper the wrong way as he fired the spot kick into the corner of the net.

Romsey further punished their ten-man opponents when Cegielka raced clear of this marker, rounded the goalkeeper and scored into an unguarded net to seal Town’s fourth consecutive Tuesday night win on home turf.

Town move up to ninth in the Division One table and travel to Folland Sports tomorrow (ko 3.00 pm) as they bid to make up ground on the playoff pack.
