FOLLOWING their impressive win against Fareham the week before, Hursley travelled to Salisbury to take on South Wilts 2s.
The previous week, Hursley had performed well in the field, taking all 10 wickets and setting themselves a comparatively small total of 97 to win. With just a few hiccups on the way, the target had been reached in the 27th over, Tom Flynn (50*) aided by Paddy McNamarra (16*) getting them over the line. This week, the target required was almost double, as South Wilts posted a score of 186.
Whilst Pearce (77) was at the wicket, South Wilts looked like they would post a plus 200 score.
Superb slip catching by Will Flynn and Oli Green off the pace bowling of Paddy McNamara and Ben Holden respectively, accounted for the early wickets. McNamara was exceptionally frugal, barely conceding two runs per over. However, the home team stepped up the run rate and at 140 for 3 in the 40th they were well placed. The introduction of O’Connor for his first bowl of the season accounted for Pearce and tight bowling and excellent fielding kept the runs in check. McNamara took 3 for 17 in his 9 overs and Ben Holden 3 for 27.
The Hursley reply started well but with the score on 34, Ollie Spink was caught behind for 21. At 49 for 3, Hursley found themselves in a similar position to the previous week. As in the previous week, Tom Flynn and Paddy McNamara dug themselves in, ran well between the wickets and punished any loose bowling. The partnership of 106 took the visitors to the brink of victory, with McNamara eventually departing for 60 and Flynn for 48. For South Wilts, Sam Pittman took five catches behind the stumps. With only 10 runs needed when McNamara parted, Oli Green and Kian O’Connor saw the visitors home.
This completed a good weekend for Hursley CC with the second team beating Bishop's Waltham by two wickets, the winning runs coming in the final over. The third team successfully chased 211 against Fareham 2s with promising youngster Ollie Brimble scoring an impressive 92 not out, supported by Nic Turner with 54 not out in a 126 run partnership.
