The first official Ryder Cup took place in the United States in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The first Wellow Junior Ryder Cup took place at Wellow Golf Club, Ryedown Lane on Saturday September 9.
The new event for the junior section was a huge success thanks to the commitment, and much hard work, of the two junior competition secretaries, Dave Porter and Neil Brading, and the players enjoyed a great event.
The sun was shining at 9.30am, as 21 juniors, the two competition secretaries and the lady captain, Caroline Ludlam, posed for their photos and were called to the tee by junior organiser Steve Chester.
Flags were flying, results were posted on a huge TV in the clubhouse and team spirits were high with Emma Chester leading team USA and Farren Porter team Europe.
The morning foursome 9-hole concluded with USA 5 and Europe 1 and a chance for players to refuel with a pre-ordered lunch in the clubhouse. The afternoon saw the singles end with USA 7 1/2 and Europe 4 1/2 making the USA team the winners with
13 1/2 to Europe’s 5 1/2.
Most importantly, and as is Wellow Junior Section’s aim, the junior players, ranging from 7 to 17 years old, enjoyed their golf. They also exhibited great fortitude and commitment playing 27 holes in scorching weather.
