The four major events that are considered the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world take place each year between April and July with the biggest names in golf in attendance. The Masters was the first major tournament to tee off the year. The odds across many online bookies were quite competitive and for those interested in future tournaments, use this promo to wager on the golfer predicted to win.
Golf’s four majors are not the only big tournaments on the PGA calendar. The marathon golf season sees tournaments take place nearly every weekend between October and August. Not all of the events on the calendar have the same prestige, but there are some that stand out more than others.
The Masters
The Masters is the granddaddy of all golf tournaments. It is held every April at August National in Augusta, Georgia. The famous course has seen the greatest golfers walk its well-manicured fairways and greens.
Augusta National has a southern charm that dates back to the course’s founding in the 1930s. Tradition is always on tap at the golf course and it is reflected in the giving of the green jacket to the tournament’s winner.
The Open Championship
The Open Championship is now the final major tournament on the golf calendar. The tournament is the only PGA event held outside of North America. It is the oldest of the major tournaments having been first played in 1860 at Scotland’s Prestwick Golf Club.
The tournament rotates between golf courses in the United Kingdom with the 2019 version being held at the Royal Portsrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
U.S. Open
The U.S. Open takes place every third Sunday in June and is played at various locations around the United States. The tournament was first played in 1895 and it culls together players from both the professional and amateur ranks.
Due to the varying skill level on display, the tournament tends to have a few surprises in the final standings each year.
PGA Championship
The PGA Championship was moved from its previous spot on the PGA’s calendar in August to May in 2019. The move gives the 103-year-old golf tournament more exposure as the month is far less congested with sports than in late summer.
Like the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship rotates to different American golf courses each the year.
The Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup isn’t a PGA major, but it is one of the most prestigious events that golfers want to win. The tournament is held every two years and pits Europe against the United States in a match play golf event.
Each tournament is filled with excitement and fiery golf play as both teams vie for the Ryder Cup trophy. The next Ryder Cup will be held in 2020.
Tour Championship
The PGA’s top 30 money winners from the season battle it out at the Tour Championship to conclude the golf year. The tournament is fairly new as it was only started in 1987 and it lacks much of the glamour of the major events.
Still, it is an important golf tournament to win thanks to the $9 million prize fund that is up for grabs. The Tour Championship has taken place at Atlanta, Georgia’s East Lake Golf Club every year since 2004. Tiger Woods won the 2018 event solidifying his return to the big time on the PGA Tour.
