ROMSEY Town face an agonising wait to find out if they can still fight for their Wessex top-flight future.
The Bypass boys have hit rock-bottom again following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at reigning Sydenhams Premier champions Blackfield & Langley and do not return to action until April 21 at home to Winchester City.
By then Fawley, currently locked on 23 points with Romsey, will have played four more games and third-to-bottom Downton another one.
“By the bank holiday Monday game against Winchester we’ll know one way or the other if we’re still in it going into the last week,” said co-boss John McFarlane.
“Until then, there’s not a lot we can do. It’s a weird situation.
“Initially I thought the fact we’d played more games than everyone else might work to our advantage, giving us more time to train and so on, but it hasn’t worked out like that.
“We played four games in one week and now we’ve got two weeks without one.
“But it can’t be helped because other clubs are struggling to fit their fixtures in.”
McFarlane, coach at Blackfield until midway through the season, felt Romsey were the better side in the first half at Gang Warily.
But one long ball allowed Craig Feeney to open them up before Danilo Cadete replied to make it 1-1 at half-time.
“In the end we came apart from our own error,” he said.
“One direct shot came through, our keeper hesitated and they’ve had a shot which rebounded off our keeper to Joe Urquhart.
“He’s passed back and Brad Snelling’s picked it up and they’ve scored with a deflected free kick which was given to Martin Warren.
