THE public has responded to a Belgarum story about the danger spots for pedestrians in Winchester.

This column highlighted Bridge Street, Chesil Street and North Walls as unpleasant places for people to walk close to traffic.

Nick Wray contacted Belgarum to say: "Thursday's Belgarum (7/11l  on unpleasant placed to walk in Winchester coincided with a trip down St Jame's' Lane at 8.45am, with queues of cars coming up the hill, and vast Landrover-type SUV's heading downhill at speed, and mounting the narrow, leaf-strewn, pavement where pedestrians are squeezed against hedges.

"To be fair, this is probably slightly preferable to the horrendously dangerous Stockbridge Road rail bridge underpass at Winchester Station, which is barely one person-wide. Nor any number of horrible pedestrian paths and crossings in Winchester, such as the dangerous mini-roundabout at Clifton Terrace/Upper High St and St Paul's Hill (spanning over the railway line). Why is Winchester so poorly provisioned for pedestrian and bike safety".

Marion Schiesser said: "Another spot I don't like is either side of the top of Canon Street, on that side of St Cross Road. The pavement is very narrow there and buses and lorries often come past.

"It's not (quite) so bad walking up, although I often feel as if I need to go close to the wall, but walking down is dreadful as one cannot see what is coming from behind."

In Twyford, Tony Bronk says: "Please consider Twyford High Street between the Queen Street exit and Manor Road; also along Finches Lane/ Shawford Road between the Queen Street junction and the western side of the bridge over the river Itchen".
