OVER the last 50 years public policy in Winchester has seen ongoing efforts made to make life more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists.
The High Street was pedestrianised in 1974 and that area has been increased over the years to cover parts of Middle Brook Street, Parchment Street, Upper Brook Street, The Square and others. Twenty miles per hour speed limits have been introduced on many roads to slow traffic
But there are places where being a pedestrian or a cyclist is deeply uncomfortable.
Here are Belgarum's top four or perhaps bottom four places:
North Walls: the north side is especially hairy as traffic accelerates down the hill from the traffic lights at the junction with Hyde Street and Jewry Street Heavy good vehicles lean menacingly over the walkway because of the camber of the road;
City Bridge: exceedingly narrow. An idea for a footbridge next to the bridge a few years back never materialised;
Chesil Street: both sides, on the pavements by Chesil Theatre and Avalon House.
For Belgarum, it's the fact that vehicles can approach from behind and pass within a foot or so of your head.
