DRINKING water from Twyford pumping station will now be even cleaner than before.
Southern Water has spent £2m upgrading the facility in Hazeley Road.
It currently supplies water to Eastleigh, Fair Oak, West End, Botley and some eastern parts of Southampton.
The improvements have included new pipes along with a new disinfection main, which allows an extra stage of cleaning.
The work was carried out by 4Delivery, and the company will remain on site until February while testing takes place.
The building firm also operates a scheme where it donates money to good causes for every accident-free construction day.
It has raised £1,119, which will go to the Twyford Waterworks Trust. Its volunteers maintain the Edwardian pumping station that stands next to the current one and is a scheduled ancient monument.
Nigel Smetham, head of water quality at Southern Water, said: "This scheme is further evidence of Southern Water's continued commitment to providing good quality drinking water for our customers and ensuring it continues to meet the rigorous standards we expect."
