ST Faith's Primary School in Winchester looks set to be one of the first in the city to introduce an outside classroom.

The school has recently further developed part of its environmental area near the water meadows into a usable working space. The school is now planning to put up a sail as a 'roof' and to use the area for teaching all year round.

"It's an obvious place to study science and art, but we're also planning literacy and numeracy lessons in the outside classroom too", said head teacher Peter Burbridge.

"We're planning to establish a gardening club, and hope it won't be too long before we are able to grow our own produce to sell at school snack time."

The idea for the outside classroom was driven by requests from both children and teachers alike.

Children from the school in class Saturn have recently been filming to produce a DVD on their own school environment which they plan to sell to raise money to fund the 'classroom roof' or sail.
