A REGISTER of trees in Winchester council tenants’ gardens is being drawn up following concerns about the number of mature trees.
Cllr Chris Pines, Labour group leader, said trees planted 40 or 50 years ago have outgrown many tenants’ ability to look after them.
Cllr Ian Tait, portfolio holder for housing services, said the council always accepted responsibility for dealing with large trees.
A recent audit by insurers showed the council needs to take a more active approach to inspection and maintenance.
The cost of the new approach is being assessed.
