• ALRESFORD Rugby Club has paid tribute to a founder member, Brian Cutler, who has died after a long illness.
Club president, Hugh Ogus and vice-chairman, Andy Denham Smith, said: “Brian was a long-time stalwart of Alresford RFC. He was a great lover of all sport and played many, including golf, tennis and cricket, but, basically he was a ‘rugby man’.
“He was immensely proud of the team and worked hard to ensure its success. Alresford RFC grew and prospered, but has always suffered from not having its own ground within the town.
“Brian was very aware of this shortcoming which stifled further development and made every effort to persuade the town council to acquire some land. It is sad that he never lived to see this project, of which he was one of the primary instigators, come to fruition.”
The funeral took place last Wednesday (July 24), at St John’s Church.
