I remember frequently as a child being told I was foolish. I never went out to cause trouble, but obviously frequently did silly things.
Having to used to this state of being significant years later, I decided that I would spend Sunday afternoon cycling clockwise around the Portsmouth peninsula.
That’s quite an effort – and some may say, silly.
Three and a half hours, 1,062 calories, 15.3 miles (24.6km for the youth), lots of water, one cup of tea, and half a cone of chips later – I successfully announced that I like Portsmouth. And had a sore bum.
Meandering across the Hilsea Lines, going down the harbour looking over to Hayling Island, chopping through the housing estates of Eastney, appearing on the waterfront through Southsea and back up past the Mountbatten Centre created a beautiful route of fantastic sights and scenery.
We have a few cycle routes in Winchester, but none that take you on a tour of the city, get you away from the busy streets and allow you really see the city.
These aren’t difficult to set up or maintain and we already have a lot of interesting sights that cyclists would really enjoy coming to see.
Presently, taking on the heavy Winchester city centre traffic, cycling around the shoppers and making up your own routes – now that is something only a foolish person would do.
