Community organisations in Romsey are pulling together to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Romsey Lions will be donating the proceeds of their bookstall in the Cornmarket on Saturday (January 23) to Haiti relief charities. On the same day, the Rotary Club of Romsey Test (together with the Romsey Rotary Club and the Inner Wheel Club) will be holding a street collection in aid of the ShelterBox organisation, a Rotary charity specialising in disaster relief.

Each Shelterbox costs £490 and contains a tent for 10 people, blankets, water purification equipment, a cooker and tools together with useful gifts for children. Shelterbox already has a Response Team in the Haitian capital Port au Prince working with local officials and with Rotary club members in Haiti. The city is totally devastated. The Team's host simply said: "There is no more Haiti."

With the help of Virgin Atlantic, 1,700 ShelterBoxes have been sent to Miami ready to be moved to Haiti as soon as possible. Another 1,600 boxes are being prepared, enough to house 33,000 people!"There will be a Shelterbox on display on Saturday in the Cornmarket so that you can see what it contains. How many boxes can Romsey add to the total?" said John Gould of the Rotary Club of Romsey Test.
