SIR — As I write, it is Tuesday morning, January 5. I have just returned from a journey into Winchester.
On my journey, I noticed two motorised road sweepers in Hyde Street and Wales Street, slowly and carefully sweeping up the grit laid on the roads in the present icy spell of weather.
Why am I commenting upon this? Because heavy snow is forecast for tonight!

Talk to the Meteorological Office and the highways department in an exercise called ‘joined-up thinking’.
The autumn leaves are long gone and any litter can surely wait.
