SIR — Further to your article (Chronicle, May 7) ‘More Hampshire Villages Enlist In The 30 Club’, may I point out that the village of Cheriton has had a 30mph speed limit since the 1990s.
The parish council successfully applied for the limit to be imposed on the village owing to its road layout and many bridges, making the road dangerous when travelling fast.
The 30mph limit recently installed which applies to the village of Cheriton is the restriction to 30mph on the A272, covering the Cheriton/ Kilmeston crossroads.
This road is the boundary between the two parishes, and for years the crossroads have been an accident black spot.
I would, however, suggest that the siting of the 30mph sign on the A272 could have been given more thought in order to cover the crossroads.
The sign warning of the 30mph restriction when travelling east is far too close to the crossroads.
While I am in complete support of these limits, they are only as good as when they are enforced.
This means police supervision of them from time to time.
