SIR — I work in an office overlooking Sussex Street and observe the constant obstruction of the road by the contractors working on the new county council offices, by contractors’ vehicles and operations.

They have recently changed the layout of the road passing the site.

Previously the lorries being unloaded or waiting to be unloaded, parked mostly on the right side of the road, on double yellow lines, opposite the bus stop.

With the alterations to the traffic flow, they are now parking on the opposite side of the road, often completely obstructing the bus stop by parking within the designated bus stop markings, as well as along the double yellow lines.

This is making it very difficult for passengers waiting at the stop to see a bus coming and for the bus driver to see anyone waiting. Recently I observed the frustration of a lady signalling for a bus to stop, only for the driver to go straight past, not seeing her.

How can the contractor be allowed to get away with this blatant ignoring of traffic regulations, when any other member of the public would be booked as soon as a traffic warden arrived?

The unloading operations are also a danger to pedestrians, as they have to walk past fork lift truck and other vehicles and obstructions when using the footpath.
