WINCHESTER BID has rewarded the work of a voluntary group which brings thousands of pounds into the city.
Friends of King Alfred Buses have provided heritage bus services on New Year’s Day for 25 years.
“The people in this group are all genuine enthusiasts who give their time voluntarily to rebuild and run these historic buses for the benefit of others,” said Ges Potter, of Winchester BID.
“Conservative estimates suggest that more than £15,000 is spent in the city by visitors who use its buses.
“Winchester is so fortunate that FoKAB is based here in the city and there is talk of seeing the buses at other events this year.”
Presenting a cheque for £500, chairman, Jeremy France, said: “BID is proud to offer support to a voluntary organisation which brings so much to our city’s economy.”
Peter Murnaghan, who chairs FoKAB, said: “We are delighted to accept this donation.
“These bus services recreate the old routes operated by King Alfred buses until the company closed down in 1973. We cannot charge fares on our buses, so the free rides in and around Winchester are enjoyed by thousands of residents, visitors and enthusiasts, who come here on this special day each year.”
