VILLAGERS near Winchester have launched a fund-raising appeal to help build a new £420,000 community centre.
Residents of Easton have worked tirelessly to pull in £320,000, but their project could be delayed if they don’t raise £100,000 by June.
They hope to sign a contract with builders next month to demolish the village’s dilapidated hall in Chapel Lane, and replace it with a new facility.
As well as a community facilities, the new building will include a cricket pavilion.
“We’re appealing for personal and corporate donations,” said Philip Wolfe, vice-chairman of the Easton Challenge Team.
“We really need people’s help and now is the final time of asking. Any financial contributions from individuals or companies will really make the difference in making this project happen.”
On Monday (May 18) organisers are giving villagers a progress update on the scheme, which will include officers’ reports from 2008, a timetable for rebuilding the hall, and a question-and-answer session with the new facility’s architect.
If funding can be secured, demolition work is expected to start in September, and it is hoped the new building will be in place by May next year. Monday’s meeting takes place in the existing hall in Chapel Lane at 8.30pm.
