SIR — I am simply appalled by the proposal to build two huge wind turbines on Salt Hill near Mercury Park at East Meon.

The site chosen is adjacent to a very well used long distance path, the South Downs Way, and is within the designated South Downs National Park.

I am in favour of renewable energy in appropriate places, but not in national parks, AONBs and other areas of beautiful countryside.

The size of the proposed wind turbines is enormous, and they will stand out like a sore thumb in a beautiful landscape.

At over 126 metres, it is well over half the height from sea level of Salt Hill (234 metres).

I write this on behalf of the ramblers in Hampshire. The ramblers’ position, nationally and locally, is that they are in favour of renewable energy.

That includes wind energy, but only in appropriate positions and not where it has a detrimental visual impact on beautiful countryside.

This is an important issue for members of the public. We need to preserve what is left of our wonderful countryside.

I very much hope that your readers will object to the proposal in the strongest terms possible.
