PLANS to extend a Winchester nursing home have been given the go-ahead.

Hartford Care Ltd succeeded in a bid to add 16 bedrooms to Tegfield House in Chilbolton Avenue after councillors approved its application by six votes to four.

This is despite some councillors and seven objectors to the scheme express ing concern about the extension’s impact on properties in Bath Place.

Cllr Barry Lipscomb said: “I do have very real concerns about the impact of the extension on people in 49 and 50 Bath Place in particular. It’s going to be overbearing on the people at the back.”

The proposals involved increasing the number of bedrooms at the home from 24 to 40 by adding a one-and-a-half storey extension to the south of the existing structure.

“I think the architect has done a good job,” said Cllr Ian Tait. “Tegfield House from my limited experience is a very good nursing home and it would be of benefit to the community in Winchester.”
