CONTROVERSIAL moves to shake up parking provisions in Romsey are being opposed by town councillors.

Test Valley Council wants to reallocate long-stay and short-stay spaces in Newton Lane, Broadwater Road, Crosfield Hall and Princes Road car parks.

But that would mean losing up to 22 cheaper long-stay spaces – a move designed to attract shoppers to the town.

Residents, traders and shoppers voiced their opinions at a meeting organised by Romsey Town Council. Afterwards, Mayor Karen Dunleavey said: “We have decided we do not support the changes and it was agreed we would present our findings to the borough council.

“Everybody agrees something needs to be done, but losing 22 cheaper long-stay spaces is the answer.”

The scheme is backed by the chamber of commerce, who say short-stay parking needs to be freed up to improve passing trade, though some fear it will increase the number parking for free in residential roads.

Town councillor, Ian Richards, has already said: “The effect on such as Riverside Gardens, Mountbatten Avenue, Priestlands and Knatchbull Close will be worsened, with unlawful or dangerous all-day parking and no other option if they can’t find a space.”
