SIR — I refer to the letter (Chronicle, April 2) linked to parking in the Winchester High Street area.
Maybe the writer would like to refer to the Highway Code. Traffic wardens are not an exclusive bunch when trying to understand the rules of the road.
There are in fact two large signs located either side of the High Street, Jewry Street end, that clearly indicates that there is no vehicle access between the hours of 10.00am and 4.00pm (Monday to Saturday) and no waiting at anytime.
If the driver did not have the opportunity to see these signs, they must have entered the High Street from St Thomas Street which would have meant they had just driven down a one-way street the wrong way!
I am sure the penalty would have been considerably more severe than a £35 fine, if the driver had struck an adult or child whilst driving and parking in this restricted area. Well done to the traffic warden.
Martin Wilson, St Thomas Street, Winchester.
