Police said the incident happened at around 10.15am on Tuesday, April 7, at The Buttercross in High Street.
Officers added that the victim was standing with her mother, when a man allegedly touched her.
They reported the matter to police, who are now asking for anyone with information to come forward.
PC Mandy Smith said: “This incident has left the girl understandably very upset. This type of incident is thankfully very rare.
“The town centre was very busy at the time of the incident so there is a good chance it was witnessed by someone. Anyone with information should contact police as soon as possible.”
