The Pilgrims' School Chamber Choir will be appearing in the English National Ballet’s new production of Nutcracker at the Mayflower in Southampton this week.

This is ENB’s eleventh incarnation of the classic Christmas fairytale, set on Christmas Eve in Edwardian London. Staging and costume details have been strictly under wraps.

The choir lends its voices to the dizzying whirl of the Waltz of the Snowflakes – contributing an unmistakably icy and ethereal timbre.

“It’s surprisingly demanding for the singers,” said choir director Russell du Plessis.

“The orchestra works itself up into a proper blizzard at one point, and you have to somehow cut straight through all that with a bell-like, clear tone that is strong enough to carry right to the back of the auditorium. And you need to make it sound effortless, too!”

After an eagerly anticipated opening night on Thursday, audiences still have three more chances to experience the magic, with performances on Friday evening and two shows on Saturday.
