DESPITE delays due to the weather, the Christmas lights have been switched on in Romsey.
The lights were originally going to be turned on last Saturday, November 23 - however, it was cancelled on Thursday, November 22 due to the arrival of Storm Bert and safety concerns over forecast 50mph gusts of wind.
The lights were instead turned on over the weekend by the mayor of Romsey Cllr John Parker in a smaller ceremony late on Friday, with the lights themselves having been put up by electric and event services company SJT Services.
Storm Bert: Romsey Christmas lights switch-on 2024 cancelled
READ MORE:In a video on the Romsey Town Council Facebook page, Cllr Parker said: "Tomorrow's event would have been quite spectacular, with entertainment and shopping stalls. But unfortunately, Storm Bert threatens us with strong winds and a lot of rain. Under those circumstances, we couldn't possibly put the event on for safety reasons - so, we are doing it tonight inside the town hall, so it will all be on for Storm Bert, ready.
"But first of all, a few thanks to people who committed their time to tomorrow's event, but are now unable to attend."
The lights now criss-cross the centre of Romsey, with a large Christmas tree by the statue of Lord Palmerston outside the town wall.
