A BUSINESSWOMAN is fighting to raise awareness and make life better for people living with disabilities.

Anouska Grist, 38, has launched #WeDeserveBetter, a campaign that aims to promote awareness of the many access issues faced by people with disabilities.

The mother of three, founder and owner of award-winning cosmetic business Novapure Naturals, has MS and uses mobility aids.

#WeDeserveBetter (Image: Anouska Grist) Anouska said: "Things need to change. We're nearly in 2025 and I'm completely bemused as to why we have to battle for accessibility. Why aren't we going on with the times?"

The University of Winchester alumnus was diagnosed with MS nine years ago and has had to adapt to using mobility aids like rollators and wheelchairs.

The campaigner said: "There are so many barriers to access. I know I'm fed up with it. I've only been in a wheelchair this year, since May-time, but it's been eye-opening.

"It's taken me being in a wheelchair to see this accessibility issue."

Anouska listed several examples, including bathroom access and adult changing facilities in locations like supermarkets.

She said: "There's always a baby changing facility, but there rarely are adult changing facilities. Where's the dignity?"

The entrepreneur also referenced how difficult it is to use disability-friendly doors. At her local bus stop, wheelchair users need to tackle a slop, open a door and let off their break before wheeling themselves in.

She said: "Accessibility isn't about ticking a box, it's about creating spaces where everyone can participate equally.

"The current standards fall woefully short, leaving individuals with disabilities excluded from experiences that many take for granted."

Through the campaign, Anouska is looking to: raise awareness by sharing real stories about the barriers people face; hold society, businesses and organisations to account; and inspire unity by encouraging people to come together to make change happen.

A fashion-lover, Anouska customised her wheelchair and rollator into Madame Chanel and Lady Prada with crystals, faux fur and designer badges.

The customisations are conversation starters that not only reflect her personality but also challenge the stigma surrounding mobility aids.

As part of the #WeDeserveBetter campaign, Anouska is appealing to news organisations, businesses and individuals to join up.

The award-winning businesswoman said: "Whether it's sharing the message, implementing accessible designs, or simply amplifying voices in the disabled community, every action counts."
