A Hampshire school has hosted a free cardiac screening session for 100 pupils and staff.

The Mountbatten School in Romsey welcomed the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) mobile heart screening unit on Wednesday, November 13.

The screening session, made possible by the Phil Standing memorial fund, identified five people who require further investigation by their GP.

The biennial event is funded by the £6,500 raised by students, staff, and friends of Sue Fisher, Phil's mother.

The event is in memory of Phil, a former Mountbatten student who died of sudden cardiac failure in 2012.

This is the fifth screening at the school, with Sue feeling a strong connection to the place where Phil spent his teenage years.

Sue recalls how, after Phil's death, the first person to check on her was Phil's Mountbatten tutor, 14 years after he left the school.

Recently, she hosted a stand at the Romsey Joint Charities Christmas Fair at Crosfield Hall on Saturday, November 16.

Year 9 students, who will benefit from the screening when they reach Year 11, worked with the art department to decorate festive candles for sale at the fair.

The money raised will go towards the next screening.

CRY's annual awareness week runs from November 23 to December 1, with fundraising and awareness events across the UK.

Sue will be taking on her own 12-a-week challenge, with Romsey Rapids supporting her to complete 12 classes at their sports complex over the seven days.
