A Winchester school has been given £5,000 to buy new sports equipment.

The Westgate School, in Cheriton Road, was given the money by property developer Gentian.

The school used the funds to buy four new sets of goalposts, footballs, four basketball hoops and basketballs.

The last time the school bought new goalposts was seven years ago, and some of them were in poor condition.

"The goalposts and basketball hoops and boards that their money has now provided in both the upper and lower school have transformed our break and lunchtimes.

"Pupils now are playing football or basketball at these times and being active and brilliant.

"Because of Gentian's generosity, we have also been able to stock up on footballs and basketballs. It is just brilliant.

"We would like to thank Gentian so much for their generous sponsorship. We are very lucky."

Gentian's planning director, Aiden Murray, said: "We’re only too pleased to have been able to help The Westgate School with this donation and are delighted that they’ve used it to buy new sports equipment which will benefit the pupils for many years to come."

Gentian has an ongoing commitment to supporting charities and community groups.

It has supported Winchester Rugby Football Club for the past nine years and Yellow Door, a charity that supports victims of domestic and sexual abuse, since the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2022, it announced three more Winchester-based charity partners, namely The Winchester Beacon, Winchester & District Young Carers and Move Momentum.
