A historic site in Winchester has been updated to improve access for visitors with mobility issues.

The Hospital of St Cross has introduced new facilities for wheelchair users, including a lift to the Brethren’s Hall and a push-button access route through the church's ambulatory.

The ancient cobbles beneath the Beaufort Tower have also been levelled.

The lift, funded by the Friends of St Cross, retracts into the stone flooring when not in use.

The additions have significantly improved the visitor experience, according to a spokesperson for the site.

The Friends of St Cross, which has raised more than £210,000 over the past 12 years, have played a significant role in enhancing and maintaining the site.

The updates are part of ongoing efforts to preserve and adapt the medieval buildings, ensuring they remain accessible and enjoyable for all visitors, according to a statement from the hospital.
