The Winchester Guildhall clock face will be lit up in orange as part of a campaign to end violence against women and girls.

The Soroptimists (SI) from Winchester and Solent East clubs will join forces with Stop Domestic Abuse in Havant to also illuminate the Spinnaker Tower on Monday, November 25.

The Winchester Guildhall clock face will also glow orange over the weekend of November 23, in partnership with Winchester City Council.

This is all part of the Soroptimist International 'Orange the World' campaign, which runs from November 25 and includes 16 days of activism, ending on December 10, the UN Human Rights Day.

The Soroptimists from Winchester have joined a campaign to end violence against women and girls (Image: Soroptimists Winchester) Monday, November 25 is also White Ribbon Day, the international day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women.

This day has been officially adopted by the United Nations as its International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

At its AGM, Stop Domestic Abuse highlighted that they had responded to 39,000 calls through their helplines with advice and support, a seven per cent increase on last year.

A total of 10,306 people had been referred to the outreach and independent Domestic Violence Advisors.

It also provided training to 1,272 professionals to improve response to domestic abuse and stalking.

SI Winchester will run a social media campaign throughout the 16 days, highlighting the different forms of abuse and creating awareness among the community.

They believe prevention is key and noticing early signs can prevent further distress.

SI Winchester will staff the charity chalet on Saturday, December 7, where the Mayor of Winchester will join them.

Members will wear orange and give out information as well as selling items for charity.

It is also an opportunity to introduce visitors to the Soroptimist organisation and talk more about the work to transform the lives of women and girls, through education, empowerment and enablement.

SI Winchester supports the Winchester Hospice, the Women’s Refuge, the Winchester Beacon and the Trinity Centre and Two Saints in Southampton.

SI Solent East local projects include Women in Prison and Contact the Elderly.

Soroptimist International is a global women’s organisation and members will be holding orange events all over the world.
