THE city centre was filled with joy when a community hero turned on the Christmas lights.

On Thursday, November 14, Winchester was packed with people keen to celebrate the festive season.

Organised by Winchester BID, the entertainment kicked off at 4.30pm in The Broadway with Heart Radio and a number of live performances.

Also taking to the stage were groups such as Harestock Primary School Choir, The Pilgrims’ School Chamber Choir and Rubik’s Cube.

Every year the lights are turned on by a nominated community hero, this year George Hatt and his sister Jess were the duo to make Winchester festive.

George, 25, has been diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer.

He underwent surgery in early April and was told by doctors that he had just 18 months to live. Since his diagnosis, George's family have started to fundraise to complete items on his bucket list.

The ‘Hatt’s Off to George Team’ wants to spread awareness for The Brain Tumour Charity to further their efforts in finding a cure.
