Knowing that millions of people have elected as their president a convicted felon who carelessly utters statements like “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had”, is nothing short of terrifying. In Remembrance week, lest we forget, can we really believe this couldn’t happen here? While some of us, trying to forget Johnson, still hear him on television describing Trump as “courteous and polite”, we are reminded that there are still Trump loyalists such as Johnson and Farage peddling simplistic answers to deeply complex issues.
Our current archaic voting system, First Past the Post, allows for minority rule, distorting the true voice of the people. Just look at Labour, who secured a massive majority with a mere 34 per cent of the vote, and Johnson ascended with less than 44 per cent.
The year 2029 of the next General Election is fast approaching. If we don’t take action now to ensure our votes truly matter and advocate some form of Proportional Representation, we risk slipping into the chaos, division, and hostility that is currently consuming the US. We must awaken to the urgency of our situation before it’s too late.
