A West End musical has taken to the stage in Hampshire and it is loud, hilarious and absolutely brilliant.

When I saw &Juliet, which reimagines Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, was going on tour I was thrilled.

Picking up three Olivier Awards and six WhatsOnStage Awards, the West End version was a hit and I loved it so much I went twice when it was London.

So yes, I very much went into the tour version of the production with high hopes of a brilliant evening. And it did not let me down.

&Juliet is not your typical tale... &Juliet is not your typical tale... (Image: &Juliet) Forget the gloomy, serious renditions of Shakespeare, &Juliet is filled with loud colours, funny lines and brilliant music - specifically the songs penned by Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin.

On stage, the cast jams to songs by the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, and many more.

The musical imagines what would've happened if Juliet hadn't died, if she had put down the dagger and continued her life without Romeo. What would have been her destiny?

To escape her controlling mother, Juliet, played by the brilliant Gerardine Sacdalan, escapes with her best friend May, Nurse and new BFF April AKA Shakespeare's wife Anne Hathaway. This makes complete sense in context.

The four make their way to Paris where they sneak into a ball held by the Du Bois family which causes a whole range of shenanigans.

The cast vocals were incredible. It's worth a ticket just to hear Gerardine Sacdalan (Juliet), Lara Denning (Anne Hathaway), and Sandra Marvin (Angelique, Juliet's nurse).

Southampton-born X-Factor star, Matt Cardle, took on the role of The Bard with great vocals and charming lines, it was easy to root for him and Anne Hathaway as a duo.

Another famous face in the production include This Morning's and Strictly Come Dancing's Ranj Singh, who played French father Lance - he had the audience in hysterics from the first word.

Ultimately, &Juliet has everything: Pop music, funky dancing, confetti, explosions and hilarious lines.

It was my third time seeing the show, and it was just as brilliant as the version in Shaftesbury Theatre - don't miss this.

&Juliet is at the Mayflower in Southampton until Saturday, November 9. More information and how to book tickets can be found at www.mayflower.org.uk or call 02380 711811
