Residents have chosen a name for a new primary school.

The Berewood development school will be called Newlands Primary Academy, after a vote by the community.

The school, which is part of the University of Chichester Academy Trust, is set to open in September 2025 in the new development west of Waterlooville, in the southern parishes of the Winchester City Council district.

The trust asked for suggestions from the local community, especially future parents, carers, and young people in Berewood. Four names were put forward: Forest, Newlands, River, and Woodland.

The names were chosen based on historical documents, area maps, previous consultations, and initial talks with the community.

Newlands Primary Academy was the winner.

Jennese Alozie, CEO of the University of Chichester Academy Trust, said: "We would like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to vote and for taking an interest in our new-build primary academy.

"This school will be a vibrant, inclusive community that will transform life chances and ensure every pupil thrives and we are delighted that it will be a part of our family of schools.

"We look forward to work beginning on the site and will keep the local community updated on its progress."

The name was initially suggested because the school is located in Newlands parish, and both Newlands Farm and Newlands Lane are near the site.

The name reflects the area's history and places the school at the heart of the community.

Once completed, the two-storey academy will offer primary education for up to 315 children, aged four to 11.

It will also have special resource provision for eight pupils with special educational needs.
