A WINCHESTER man has narrowly avoided jail after stealing almost £150 worth of meat from Marks & Spencer.
Benjamin Shaw, 39, of Pemerton Road, stole meat to the value of £144.32 from Marks & Spencer on Tuesday, December 19, a court heard.

Appearing at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, October 16, he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Shaw has been given a 12-month conditional discharge. He must also pay £60 compensation and £85 costs.
The total amount of £145 will be paid in fortnightly instalments of £10, which will be deduced from Shaw's benefits. The payments start on November 16.
