On frequent walks around the Water Meadows, I used to pass the Handlebar Café when it was being constructed.
Part of the building team were a Hungarian, Polish and a Rumanian.
I used to stop and chat with these enthusiastic builders who explained the construction technique used to replicate a railway carriage.
I have vivid memories of tucking into an orange sponge cake drizzled with chocolate and an espresso coffee.
The Handlebar Café's unique structure and accompanying menu is a magnet for walkers and cyclists.
The South Downs Design Award is most deserved.
