A CONVENIENCE store in Winchester has been dished out a one-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

Stanmore Stores on Wavell Way, which is a Premier Stores shop, got the unenviable accolade after an inspection carried out by Winchester City Council for the Food Standards Agency in May.

Three categories were examined, two of which were found to be sub-standard: improvement was necessary in hygienic food handling and major improvement was necessary in the management of food safety.

The FSA defines the management of food safety as follows: "System or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future."

Hygienic food handling includes the "preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage" of food.

The third category examined by the FSA is the "cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene".

In this category, the store was rated as "generally satisfactory".

The Chronicle approached Stanmore Stores for comment, but received no reply.
