A charity run through the Hampshire countryside has been a huge success for the sixth consecutive year.

Roly's Run, held annually in honour of Rich Walklate following his sudden death at 33, saw dozens of participants tackle the trail through the Meon Valley on Sunday, October 6.

Rich, known as Roly, unexpectedly died in May 2018 after a brief illness, with his death believed to have been caused by sepsis.

Despite being extremely active and fit, Rich fell critically ill over a weekend and passed away within a week.

His family was left devastated, including his two elder sisters and four nieces and nephews, all under the age of five at the time.

Rich had achieved a lot in his short life, playing chess and badminton at junior county level, participating in triathlons and Ironman events, and in November 2017, becoming the first GB athlete to cross the line in the highest marathon in the world, near Everest base camp.

He had also co-directed the Cheltenham Park Run and participated in the Manchester Marathon three weeks before his death.

However, he kept his achievements largely to himself, leading his family to wrongly assume he had few friends.

His best friend Carlos was determined to keep Rich's memory alive, and established Roly's Run in his honour.

The event has grown each year, with over 250 participants last year.

Funds raised from the event go to several charities, including the Papworth Hospital Charity, the UK Sepsis Trust, and Help for Heroes.

These charities were chosen due to Rich's own struggles with a heart condition and the suspected cause of his death.

Since 2018, nearly £40,000 has been raised in Rich’s name, the bulk of which has gone to these three charities.

This year, the event was almost put at risk due to an unexpected issue.

The organisers were unable to book the main hall for the mid-November date and had to bring the event forward to early October.

This meant many regular participants had already entered other events which they could not change.

The organisers put out a call for more participants in the lead-up to the event.
