A community bike ride attracted more than 30 people after a mass cycling event was postponed.

On Saturday, September 28, to mark the end of Green Week, residents of Badger Farm and Oliver’s Battery organised a family-friendly ride.

The event was held after Cycle Winchester's Mass Ride was postponed.

The ride began in Stanmore and ended in Hursley, with stops and pick-up points along the way.

Cycling advocacy group Cycle Winchester supported and marshalled the ride.

Sustainable Oliver’s Battery, a community group, also lent its support to the event.

Two of those who took part were six-year-old Alexander and five-year-old Margot, who rode the entire five-mile route, including hills.

Margot was thrilled to have ventured into the countryside on her bike for the first time.

Alexander’s mum, Sarah, appreciated the presence of marshals, saying it was "wonderful" to have them ensuring everyone’s safety.

The event was a fun way to promote the benefits of cycling and highlighted the need for more secure cycling routes.

A spokesperson for the ride organisers said: "It was a fun event, which underscored the benefits of cycling, but highlighted the need for our local authorities to take real action to ensure there are safe cycle routes in this area, especially for children."
