The county council has welcomed the government announcement to introduce free breakfast clubs in every primary school.

The government announced its intention to roll out free breakfast clubs in primary schools from April 2025, with £7 million in funding.

With the plan, the government aims to support families with the cost of living and help them manage work commitments.

Under the initiative, 750 state-funded schools across the country are now being asked to work with the Department for Education to participate in the early adopter scheme, which will be launched in April 2025.

The early adopter scheme will test and prove what works before the national rollout.

Hampshire County Council welcomed the initiative, saying it is working to gather guidance for local schools and help them set up and run free breakfast clubs.

A spokesperson for the council said: “While we welcome the government’s announcement, it is up to schools individually to decide if they want to be involved.

“Ahead of any national advice that may be coming on this matter, we are working to collate some early helpful guidance for local schools to assist with the possible setting up and running of free breakfast clubs.”
