Could I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed by Peter Lamb (Chronicle, Letters, Sept 26) re the use of Sir John Moore Barracks and all the wonderful facilities it has, which should be utilised as much as possible in any redevelopment.

I worked there for several years as a Nursing Sister for the MoD until 2021 and know the site well. The buildings were put up in the 1980s so are not very old and could easily be re-purposed as Peter Lamb suggests. We used to see several hundred recruits during the week in the medical centre for both medical and nursing care as well as dental care. This could be converted into a civilian GP’s surgery. The gym, the climbing wall and swimming pool are fabulous facilities and the living quarters, if refurbished and brought up to date would provide good accommodation. There is no need to knock it all down and start again.

Peter did not mention the Barracks church. This gem is an oasis of peace and tranquillity and could provide the centre of a vibrant new community.

Let us hope the planners show common sense and make the best use of a pretty well-designed facility.
