A concert performance of a 13th-century liturgical drama is to be held at the Romsey Abbey.
On Friday, November 22, at 7.30pm, Vox Humana and Gregoriana will perform The Play of Daniel at the Abbey.
The performance, which marks St Cecilia’s Day, will feature narration by Sarah Bullen.
The Play of Daniel, a liturgical drama, was traditionally performed in Beauvais Cathedral, either during Advent or on the Feast of the Circumcision, likely between the Office of Matins and the celebration of High Mass.

By the end of the 13th century, these liturgical dramas had reached their peak and were subsequently banned from sacred buildings.
This led to their evolution into more earthy miracle and mystery plays, and eventually into Western theatre as known today.
The Play of Daniel presents two moral tales. The first tale recounts the prophet Daniel's interpretation of the 'writing on the wall' and his reward for honesty and absolute trust in God.
The second tale finds Daniel in the lions' den, where he is eventually saved due to his unwavering loyalty to and faith in God.

The audience is also reminded that the arrival of the Persians ultimately led to the Judaeans' return to Jerusalem, foreshadowing the Incarnation and the saving power of Christ.
The Play of Daniel has been newly realised by VH & G director Julien Chilcott-Monk.
The performance is described as a 'plainchant opera' with some added sound effects and witty narration.
Even centuries ago, the play was performed with a sense of humour.
A short motet will be sung as a prelude to each scene.
The Abbey will also provide refreshments during the interval.
