A new book exploring a decade of republican rule in Britain is being launched in Winchester.
Republic: Britain’s Revolutionary Decade 1649-1660, by historian Alice Hunt, will be launched at P&G Wells Bookshop on Thursday, October 3 at 6pm.
The book delves into the 'interregnum', a brief period of republican governance that has had a lasting impact on British monarchy, politics, religion and culture.
Professor Hunt, who lives in Winchester, recounts the thrilling tales of the republic and its characters, from politicians to poets.

The book highlights the rapid developments of the 1650s, illustrating how each year brought cataclysmic events that altered the course of the newly-formed republic and its people.
The narrative also challenges the notion that the restoration of Charles II in 1660 was inevitable or universally welcomed.
Hunt, a professor at the University of Southampton, has previously authored The Drama of Coronation and co-authored The Rough Guide to the Royals.
Her latest work, published by Faber, is priced at £25 and is available as a hardback.
Tickets for the launch event are free, but booking is essential due to limited space.
Tickets can be reserved via pgwells.co.uk.
The bookshop is located in College Street.
