WINCHESTER Half Marathon returns once again this year with its hilly course through the Hampshire countryside.

The race begins on Sunday, September 22, with the adults setting of at 9am in front of the guildhall.

Those interested can find details about the event on the Winchester Half Marathon website, but tickets are no longer being sold.

Last year's overall winner – retaining his title in the process – was George King (Winchester & District AC, 1:13:19) and the women's champion was Rachel Olds (unattached, 1:34:10). There were 614 finishers in 3:39:56 and 125 of those beat 1:45:00 on the testing course.

The 2023 edition of the Winchester Half Marathon (Image: Stu Martin) The timings for the event are as follows: the race village opens at 7am, registration opens at 7am, the warm up starts at 8.45am, the half marathon starts at 9am, the winner awards presentation starts at 11.30am and the kids race starts at 12.30pm.

The route takes runners out via Sarum Road towards Dursley, before turning back to Winchester.

There is one final gruelling climb up into Oliver's Battery before the course sweeps down past St Catherine's Hill to the finish line in front of the guildhall.

Road closures

  • Sarum Road - This road will be closed from 08:30-11:00 between its junction with Romsey Road and its junction with Chilbolton Avenue.
  • Chilbolton Avenue - This road will be closed from 08:30 – 11:00 at its junction with Sarum Road. Diversions will be in place during this time.
  • A3090 Romsey Road - This road will be closed NORTHBOUND only between its junction with Sparsholt Road and its junction with Collins Lane between 09:00 – 11:30
  • Port Lane - This road will be closed between 09:00 – 11:30 with the bulk of runners coming through between 09:30 – 10:30
  • Old Kennels Lane, Oliver’s Battery Road South and Ridgeway - This area will be heavily facilitated with runners from 09:30-11:00 approximately
  • Rooks Down Road, Ashbarn Crescent, Ivy Close - These roads will be heavily facilitated with runners between 09:45 – 11:15
  • Stanmore Lane - This road will be closed between 08:00-11:00, please where possible plan your journey around the times of this closure.
  • St Cross Road - This road will be closed Northbound between its junction with the A3090 Badger Farm Road and its junction with Lower Stanmore Lane between 09:30 – 13:00 while the runners pass through.
  • Romsey Road  - Romsey Road will be closed Southbund from 08:30-11:00, from its junction with St James Lane to its junction with Saurm Road. The road will still be open Northbound but we ask drivers to please be considerate of runners on the road.
  • Stanmore Lane - Stanmore Lane will be closed across its full length between 08:00-11:00
