IN modern-day thinking every tree is sacred and should not be touched. But is Belgarum alone in thinking that these trees standing next to the River Itchen along The Weirs are getting just a tad too big?
They look stable but what they certainly do is harm the flora and fauna of the river. Their dense shade deters plant growth that are vital to aquatic life.
In some places they reach nearly half way across the river and need cutting back.
Next time you are down there have a look at the beds of ranunculus, or water crowfoot. The long flowing plants don't grow in the shade. But the plant offers fine habitat invertebrates and a refuge and cover for fish, and a safe resting place for ducks away from predators.
