A RESIDENT of a notorious ex-offenders hostel in Winchester has been jailed for theft.
Ashik Ali, 50, of West View House in Hyde Gate, Hyde, was caught stealing perfume and a skin care product from John Lewis in Southampton on two consecutive days in May, a court heard.
On Thursday, May 23, he stole four packets of perfume, coming back the next day to steal a skin care gift set.
He has been sentenced to four weeks in prison for the theft of those items, which amounted to a total value of £635.
Ali pleaded guilty on September 10 to the offences and was sentenced at Southampton Magistrates' Court.
His numerous previous convictions were cited, and it was concluded that "the offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified".
West View House is due to close next year following chronic law-breaking by many of the residents, reported by the Chronicle this summer.
