A QUESTION answered. Last week this feature published a photo captioned Winchester Lido, the outdoor pool in Worthy Lane. We queried whether that was the correct location as the area looked too spacious. But another photo in the archive published here confirms the location. The giveaway is the Lido building. Some of the site has been developed with the St John Ambulance headquarters.

Several of the photos show children playing. Our favourite is the smiling youngsters in a backyard playground with a swing and a see-saw on tarmac.

There is also one taken at the recently-rebuilt Tun Bridge in Garnier Road, near Bar End and another taken a few hundred yards down the road when there was a swimming area fed with water from the River Itchen and the water meadows grazed with cattle. People didn't worry so much about pristine clean water. Children just wanted to have fun that cost very little. They were outside in the sunshine getting fit  and making friends rather than the countless children who today stay inside their bedrooms playing on computers and struggling with mental health.
