Fifteen 'powerful and thought-provoking' sculptures are now on display at Winchester Cathedral as part of a new exhibition.

The pieces by Laurence Edwards, from his Leaf Series, are part of the 'Borrowed Breath' exhibition, which is running until Tuesday, November 5, at the cathedral.

The exhibition, in the north transept, features ethereal, cut-through, transmorphic figures inspired by the history of the Great West Window.

Leaves and the quincunx pattern, which are four-sided shapes with a central figure, play a prominent role in these experimental pieces.

His work is said to evoke a sense of ephemerality (Image: Dr. S. J. Newman) Edwards, who is known for his mastery of bronze casting, uses this medium to explore the relationship between light, form, and the cathedral’s artefacts.

His work is said to evoke a sense of ephemerality, capturing the fluidity of the past, present, and future.

The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, said: "We are proud to be hosting this exhibition which challenges us to think about ourselves as both body and spirit, the passing of time and how we relate to the environment around us.

"These are powerful and thought-provoking sculptures that touch on some profound emotional and spiritual issues.

"The way in which Laurence has created sculptures responding to the cathedral itself is truly wonderful and will provide a unique experience to cathedral visitors this autumn."

Newman) Edwards said: "I was blown away by the great West window of Winchester Cathedral which itself had been blown away by Oliver Cromwell, only for the fragments of glass to be collected and reassembled by the people of the town.

"The resulting assemblage of fragments and light seemed a great metaphor for the exhibition I’m about to have in the cathedral.

"With my bronze figures dissolving and coalescing in cycles through this spectacular building, I try to trace attempts that have been made at making sense of our place in the world through the lens of this magnificent space."

This exhibition marks the cathedral’s first collaboration with Messums, an organisation known for connecting artists and collectors through innovative exhibitions and residencies.

Entry to the exhibition is included in the annual pass.
