A WINCHESTER pub has celebrated the opening of a new chapter under new landlords with music, food and an appearance from the leader of the city council.

On Thursday, 5 September, Ade Jones and Sarah Nubeebuckus-Jones, celebrated taking over the running of The Roebuck Inn, Stockbridge Road, with a special opening party.

Martin Tod, leader of Winchester City Council, was happy to officially open the Roebuck Inn under its new ownership. During the evening, he even served behind the bar with cheerful enthusiasm.

He said: "It goes without saying that pubs are at the heart of their communities. The warmth and energy and positivity that Ade and Sarah have brought to The Roebuck is really special. They have put it back on the map for Fulflood, and I am so pleased to be here this evening, celebrating with them."

Ade Jones said: "Winchester is a great little city. I just love it here and Sarah has never been happier, so I’m happy. Looking ahead we are getting on board more local producers."

Sarah and Ade have been running pubs together since 2006, coming in as managers of The Roebuck Inn for The Little Pub Group in mid-December last year. They are both delighted to have had the opportunity to take over its running.

Sarah and Ade have already introduced new elements. These include extending their opening hours to Tuesday evening so that The Roebuck is now only closed on Monday, Ruby Tuesday, a curry night with authentic regional curries home cooked by Sarah, and the return of the classic Sunday roast. Their aim is to run a ‘proper pub’ for the local community.

Sarah started working in restaurants in Weymouth in front of house roles when she was just 15 years old. After she and Ade took on running pubs, Sarah moved into the kitchen three years later in 2009 to cover for their head chef on his days off, and she hasn’t looked back. Her knowledge and skills have grown to the extent that she has been invited to judge at The Great Taste Awards for the past three years.

Ade started out in the hospitality industry 34 years ago. His skills as a barman and manager were recognised when he won CAMRA’s regional award for Cotswold Pub of the Year. He continues to be a champion for real ale and craft beer.

Together Sarah and Ade aim is to run a "proper pub" for the local community which included the opening party. The event was a great success. Lively music was provided by Jenny Oag, Female Vocalist of the Year 2023.  The Roebuck team dressed in their glad rags, including Ade, who is known for his bright shirts and shiny shoes. A good time was had by all with much chat, laughter, drinking, dancing and singing.
