A Wickham based garage is set to to close because of expansion plans on its current site.

Protyre Wickham, which provides tyres, servicing and MOT checks, is located alongside a Shell petrol station and the oil company is looking to redevelop the site.

The garage, popular among locals in the area, is believed to be closing at the end of the year when its current lease runs out. It is believed to be looking for a new base.

Shell UK, located at the roundabout of the A32/Hoad’s Hill, A334/Fareham Road and A32/School Road, wants to replace Protyre with a new sales building and add four fast-charging points for electric vehicles.

A planning statement written by JMS Planning and Development sent ot Winchester City COuncil, said: “The revised proposal will bring the petrol filling station up to expected standards to meet the needs and expectations of both the operator and motorists, including the provision of an EVC hub.

“Given the ongoing year-on year decline in petrol filling stations juxtaposed with a year- on- year increase in registered cars on the road, the opportunity to deliver an enhanced petrol filling station which meets a recognised local need, whilst also providing much needed and supported electric vehicle charging, should be embraced.”

The statement added: “The sales building will be single storey and modern in appearance, utilising lightweight materials to create a clean and crisp appearance.”

The planning and development company added that the new ‘sales building’ should not have an impact on trade for other shops in Wickham.

“In light of the very limited scale of the proposal and its focus on meeting the needs of the motorist, it is not considered that there will be any significant diversion of trade from the village centre or particular retail or commercial unit.”

Protyre has been contacted for comment about its relocation plans.
